The Importance of Curating a Culture of Upskilling & Career Progression, rather than Mandatory Training.

As cyber professionals, we know how important it is for teams to stay up to date in order to evidence their readiness to respond to the latest threats. But what can we do to curate a culture of upskilling & career progression, rather than mandatory training?

✍️ We want to hear from you!

  • Have you achieved success in these efforts? If so, how?
  • How does the culture surrounding upskilling affect employee morale and retention?
  • What tips would you give to someone just beginning this cultural shift?
  • How can this culture be used in areas other than cyber?

Comment below! ⬇️

  • Culture and Cybersecurity go hand-in-hand. Without the appropriate culture to cultivate cybersecurity upskilling, getting ahead with those efforts can be challenging. Additionally, many individuals won't know how Cybersecurity relates to them. As such, it is essential to explain and demonstrate why security is important to everyone while using relevant examples.
These days, I've been finding the most success utilizing AI as a primary example.
In one instance, everyone uses AI whether they know it or not. Still, most people don't know what AI or the layers and layers of underlying data and algorithms actually do.
As such, with this timely and relevant example, we can demonstrate how AI works at a basic level, discuss how the data and inputs placed into it are utilized, and enable users to better (and more securely) utilize AI. Additionally, as a 'wow' factor, talking about deepfakes, advanced phishing, and voice cloning using AI are all ways to show the dangers and WHY security is relevant to everyone.

So my tip would be to keep it relevant! Everyone has probably seen dozens of phishing training videos and will likely click through them as fast as possible. Do something new or relevant that affects users without them knowing it.
Start slow! We don't need to drown people in training or fearmonger them into this; that will turn people away.
Lastly, make it fun and interesting! Use our labs, crisis sims, chatbots, etc, to demo and show the interesting bits to get them interested in everything else.

      Great insights ZacharyAbrams !

Has anybody else leveraged AI to make cyber upskilling part of culture? Any advice for anybody looking to start a cyber upskilling program?
